Kit and storage

Travelling with a makeup kit without wrecking it

Nearly everything that goes wrong with a travelling makeup kit is caused by vibration rather than impact. A palette that survives being dropped on a bathroom floor will shatter after four hours in the hold, because sustained small movements do more damage to pressed powder than one large shock.

Packing for that specific failure mode changes what you do.

Fill the space around pressed powder

Powder cracks when it can move inside its pan, and the pan can only move if there is air around the compact. Wrapping a palette in a soft cloth or wedging it between garments removes the room it needs to rattle, which is far more effective than any hard case with a loose fit.

The often-repeated trick of putting a cotton pad inside the compact works for the same reason: it takes up the headroom and stops the cake bouncing against the lid.

Brushes travel flat or not at all

A brush packed loose in a bag will have its bristles bent against something for the whole journey, and tapered shapes do not recover from that. The bristles need to be either enclosed in a roll or guard, or lying flat with nothing pressing on the tip.

A hard-sided case is not necessary. What matters is that nothing is pushing sideways on the bundle. A simple fabric roll does this better than a box the brushes can slide around inside.

Cabin pressure and cream products

Anything liquid or semi-liquid expands as cabin pressure drops, which is why bottles that were sealed at home arrive having pushed product out around the cap. Leaving a small air gap and sealing the whole container in a bag handles both the expansion and the mess.

Decanting into small jars is worth doing for a trip of any length. It also removes the weight that makes a kit unpleasant to carry, which is usually packaging rather than product.

Sponges need to dry before they are packed

A damp sponge sealed in a case for a day will smell, and the smell does not wash out reliably. If a sponge has been used on the morning of travel it needs either a ventilated case or a separate bag with an open top.

Cases sold with sponge sets usually have ventilation holes for exactly this. They are not decorative.

Pack the routine, not the collection

The most common packing mistake is bringing options. A travel kit that contains three foundations and four lipsticks is heavy, takes longer to use every morning, and will still result in the same face you would have done with one of each.

Choosing the specific sequence you will use, and packing only that, typically halves the volume. Anything you might want is exactly the category to leave behind.

Keep one thing accessible

Whatever you would want on arrival – usually a lip product and something for under the eyes – is worth keeping in a separate small pouch rather than buried in the main case. It saves unpacking the whole kit in a hotel bathroom at midnight.

A small quilted pouch inside the larger bag is enough. The point is that it comes out as a unit.
