Sponge types explained: latex-free, dual-density and cushion
The sponge section of any beauty counter looks like variation for its own sake. It mostly is not. Each shape solves a specific problem, and a kit that has two well-chosen shapes will do more than one with eight bought at random.
Here is what each of the common formats is actually for.
The teardrop, and why it is the default
The classic egg or teardrop shape earns its position by having three usable surfaces on one tool: a broad rounded side for cheeks and forehead, a flatter side for larger sweeps, and a point for the inner corner of the eye and around the nose. That is most of a face with one object.
Its weakness is precision at edges. The point is small but it is still round, so a sharp line along the jaw or under the eye is easier with a flat edge.
Flat-edged and triangle shapes
A triangle or a sponge with a flat cut face exists for edges and for setting powder under the eyes. The flat surface presses powder into a defined area instead of stippling it across a curve, which is what you want when you are baking under-eye concealer or working along a hairline.
Mini triangles sold in bulk packs are effectively disposable and that is a reasonable use of them: work with a fresh one for each cream product and you avoid muddying colours.
Saucer and dish shapes
A saucer sponge has a wide flat face and a shallow curve, and it is designed for pressing rather than bouncing. It suits cream blush and cream bronzer, where you want to place colour in one spot and then diffuse the edge rather than distribute it evenly.
They are also easier to clean than a dense teardrop, because there is less depth for product to travel into.
What dual-density means
A dual-density sponge is made from two foams bonded together: a firmer core and a softer outer layer. The firm core stops the sponge collapsing under pressure, so it keeps its shape while you work; the soft outer layer is what actually meets skin.
The practical effect is that you can press harder without the sponge folding, which gives more coverage in less time. Single-density sponges are softer overall and better for very sheer application, which is why owning one of each is a defensible choice where owning four teardrops is not.
Latex and latex-free
Almost everything sold now is latex-free polyurethane, but the distinction survives on packaging because latex sponges were the standard for decades. Latex versions do not expand in water and have a coarser, more open cell structure that absorbs a great deal of product.
If a listing specifies latex-free, it is telling you that it expands when wet and that it will use less foundation. It is also the relevant line for anyone with a latex sensitivity, which is the reason it is still stated.
Powder puffs are not sponges
A velour or flocked powder puff has a fabric face and behaves completely differently: it carries loose powder on the surface pile and presses rather than blends. Using one for liquid foundation will not work and will ruin the puff.
They are worth having if you use loose setting powder, and largely pointless if you do not. The large body puffs are the same idea at a scale suited to shoulders and back.
