When to replace a makeup brush, and how to tell

Brushes do not have an expiry date, and the advice to replace them every three months is a retail convenience rather than a technical fact. A well-made brush that is washed properly can last for years. A badly made one can be finished in a season.

What matters is knowing which signs indicate a genuine end of life and which are cosmetic. Four of each, roughly.

Shedding that does not stop

Every new brush sheds a few loose fibres in the first two or three washes. That is trimmed hair working its way out of the ferrule and it stops. Shedding that is still happening at the tenth wash, or that gets worse, means the adhesive holding the bundle is breaking down.

A useful test: wash the brush, dry it, then run it across a dark surface. One or two fibres is normal. A visible line of them is not, and that brush will keep losing bristles into your foundation.

A ferrule that turns

Hold the handle in one hand and the ferrule in the other and twist gently. There should be no movement at all. Any rotation means the glue inside has failed, and once water has got into that joint it will get worse quickly.

This is the one failure that cannot be repaired and the one that most reliably ends a brush’s life. It is also almost entirely a function of how the brush was made, which is why the crimp is worth checking at purchase.

Splaying that survives a wash

Bristles that fan out permanently have lost the set they were given at manufacture. A brush that splays when wet but returns to shape as it dries is fine and simply needs to be dried in the right position – bristles down or flat, never upright, so water is not running into the ferrule.

If the shape does not return after a proper wash and dry, the brush will no longer place product precisely and is best demoted to a rough blending job rather than replaced immediately.

A smell that washing does not remove

A brush that smells after washing has product broken down inside the ferrule where soap does not reach. Once that has happened there is no realistic way to clean it, and it is a hygiene issue rather than a performance one.

This is much more common in natural-hair brushes and in brushes that have been dried upright, which lets water carry residue up into the base of the bundle. It is a replace.

Three things that look worse than they are

Staining is cosmetic. A brush used with a strongly pigmented product will hold that colour permanently and it does not transfer once the brush is clean. Discolouration alone is not a reason to replace anything.

Slight stiffness after washing usually means soap residue rather than damage – rinse for longer. And a brush that feels less soft after a year has often simply lost the silicone coating some manufacturers apply before packing, which was never doing anything useful.

Extending the life you already have

Two habits do most of the work: washing before the product builds up rather than after, and drying flat or bristles-down so nothing runs into the ferrule. A brush guard or simply letting brushes hang over the edge of a surface achieves the second.

Rotating between two brushes for the same job roughly doubles the interval between washes for each, which in practice means both last considerably longer than one used daily.
